Being a Christian
I just finished reading the book Power in Praise by Merlin Carothers
As charismatics we hear ‘Praise the Lord’ constantly. During the family rosary I sometimes ask my kids to say one thing they wish to thank God for. Obviously something positive in their life. Then people also keep saying be positive ... see the bright side of things.
This book made me realise I am not much of a Christian. As long as things are fine I say God you are great. I give you control of my life. You are my master. But when things are not going my way I say, “Excuse me God now let me take the reins, you just sit next to me”. And then I take control... He watches me messing things further. He sees me getting anxious, struggling striving. He waits. Until I say Lord pull me out.
Jesus asked Martha, Why are you so worried about so many things? There is only one thing that is important, Mary has chosen that.
Yesterday during the Rosary I asked the kids,, Thank God for things that irritate you, things that are not working out in your life, thank God for all the problems. So I got things like History Exam, Social studies period, Projects.
Have you ever experienced the worst things in your life turning into the best, enemies becoming friends, a loss converting to a win, a bad decision into a blessing in disguise.
Once I was making mutton curry and
the masala got burnt and as usual I became worried. Moreover my sister and family
had come over. My sister immediately said “No its not burnt!” she added a
little water made the masala soft. I had no hope. It was the tastiest mutton curry I ate that day. If my sister
could change the fate of the curry, You can imagine what God can do with our
life situations?
Our Lord once turned water into wine. He is indeed a God of the impossible.
Who is a person with a sense of humour? Is it a person who laughs when a joke is cracked. No he is a person who knows that problems are an integral part of life. So enjoy them too.
When I was in labour for my third child my mom and hubby were there with me, we were laughing and joking. Initially the pains would be 20 mins apart then 10 mins apart then the time gap would keep reducing till it became fraction of seconds apart before delivery. But since this was my 3rd delivery I knew the pains were inevitable, and I had accepted it. And did not waste the time in between to worry about it. Instead we were joking and conversing and generally having a good time. Finally when I went to labour room it took hardly 1/2 hr for the delivery.
Paul praised God when he was in prison, beaten up chained. He praised God and rejoiced. And his chains broke open. That's the power of praise, of faith in bad times.
So for me today to be a Christian is to take the bad along with the good, knowing very well that all things work out for best for those who put their trust in Him. Did u wake up late, accept it thank and praise God for it. (you slept well)Is your hair too frizzy?, accept it thank God for it.(you can get an oil massage) Is your home very messy, accept it praise God for it.(you can get your kids to be responsible and cleanup and have fun doing it.)
Be anxious for nothing. In many of my
previous confessions one sin I regularly use to confess was I don't trust God
enough, I get anxious. Actually it's not a sin, but sometimes in my anxiety and
disturbed state I neglect my duties. Also in this state, I inevitably found
someone or something to blame. Like Martha found Mary.
